How fire doors are tested

Fire doors are tested in order to ensure that they meet specific safety standards and are capable of providing protection against fire for a certain period of time. There are different tests that fire doors undergo in order to assess their resistance to fire, heat, and smoke. Here are the three most common types of fire door tests:

  1. Fire Resistance Test: In this test, the fire door is subjected to a controlled fire that simulates a real-life scenario. The door is installed in a test furnace, and the temperature inside the furnace is gradually increased until it reaches a specified temperature or time limit. The door is evaluated based on its ability to prevent the spread of fire, smoke, and heat for the required duration.
  2. Smoke Control Test: In this test, the fire door is evaluated for its ability to restrict the passage of smoke through it. The door is installed in a test chamber, and a smoke generating device is used to create smoke on one side of the door. The door is evaluated based on its ability to prevent the smoke from passing through it for a certain duration.
  3. Impact Test: In this test, the fire door is subjected to impacts from a predetermined height and mass to simulate the effects of a person or object colliding with it during a fire. The door is evaluated based on its ability to remain in place and continue to provide fire protection after being impacted.

Fire doors must pass all three tests in order to be certified as fire-rated doors. The tests are carried out by accredited testing bodies, and the results are recorded and made available for inspection. It is important to ensure that fire doors are tested and certified to ensure that they provide the necessary protection in the event of a fire.

Major body for fire test in india is CBRI Roorkee and some other private labs are also provide the test certificate which fire resistance varies from 30 minutes to 360 minutes as per requirement for purchasing party and as per law in the prevailing countries for the fire doors. Both metal and wooden fire rated doors are tested in these labs for fire testing. For more blogs click on
